7 Reasons to Celebrate #NationalRumDay at SKY Waikiki

national rum day

We all love a good drinking holiday like National Rum Day (as if we need another reason to order a cocktail… or 3… or 4…)! With holidays like this, the burning question isn’t how to celebrate, but where. Obviously, you’ll want to order a plethora of delicious drinks with your squad. But, getting everyone to decide on one place to go is always such a struggle! Fear not, we’ve got you covered! Keep reading for seven reasons why you should celebrate National Rum Day (August 16!) at SKY Waikiki.

1. Say “Hello” to the Aloha My Friend

Strong, sweet, looks great in photos… Did we just describe the perfect cocktail? We think so! If you needed a really good reason to celebrate Rum Day at SKY Waikiki, we’ve got a strong contender right here (see what we did there?). Aloha My Friend is a modern Waikiki interpretation of a classic AMF; same initials, similar ingredients, but ours has a little twist and is new and improved. Don’t forget to snap your pic of this colorful drink before you finish it all!

Aloha My Friend – Ocean vodka, Fid Street gin, Koloa coconut rum, blue curacao, lilikoi, lemon, agave ($14)

2. Birds of [Paradise] Flock Together

Maybe a super strong, super sweet drink isn’t for you. In that case, we suggest the Bird of Paradise to celebrate National Rum Day! Don’t let its pink color fool you, this drink is more tart than sweet and absolutely delicious! This tiki-style cocktail is made with bitter Campari and is a variation of a 1970’s classic cocktail. Plus, who can resist a cocktail with pineapple fronds as its garnish?! We sure can’t!

Bird of Paradise by Jordan Delguidice – Don Q rum, Campari, lemon, passionfruit, pineapple, orange, guava ($14)

3. Literal Music to Your Ears by Big John

National Rum Day can be about more than just drinks. Yeah, it’s mostly about the drinks, but it’s not the only thing that makes SKY Waikiki the perfect place to celebrate. After getting your rum cocktail of choice, sit back and relax while you listen to the soothing, magical voice of Big John. We wish he would strum his guitar and serenade us all day, every day. But, he’s here every Thursday through Saturday from 6-9pm, which is pretty darn close!

4. Do a Little Twist, do a Little Kula Shaker

A little bit of this and a little bit of that- our Kula Shaker is the perfect blend of sweet and spicy! “Kula” is Hawaiian for “golden”, so don’t be surprised when your drink arrives and looks like a glass of liquid gold! This Indian-inspired cocktail is full of fruity sweetness, but still packs a spicy kick. It’s the perfect cocktail to tickle your taste buds, make you want to dance, and will definitely leave you wanting a second (or third!).

Kula Shaker – Broker’s gin, Don Q rum, mango puree, East India-spiced syrup, lemon, Hawaiian bird pepper tincture ($14)

5. Hollaback at the Hala Kea Old Fashioned

Are you a fan of classic cocktails? If so, you’ve probably had your fair share of the old fashioned but, believe us when we say, you haven’t had an old fashioned quite like this one! Our Hala Kea Old Fashioned is a revitalized version of the classic fave and is a pleasant combination of rum, pineapple, banana, and coffee flavors. It’s so perfect for celebrating National Rum Day that you’ll want to make it yourself at home!

Hala Kea Old Fashioned – Flor de Cana & Plantation Pineapple rums, banana liqueur, coffee-scented Angostura bitters, Bittermens hellfire shrub ($14)

6. Hashtag Views

When it comes to the perfect rum cocktail for National Rum Day, the cherry on top is most definitively the views from our open-air Kalakaua deck. (Only the most gorgeous views of Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach, and the Honolulu City Lights you’ve ever seen in your life!) It’s something you don’t get to see every [National Rum] day… unless you’re us. We know, we’re spoiled 😊

7. Happy [tai]mes start with a SkyTai

Let’s be real, everyone loves a good happy hour and a good tropical cocktail, so why not have both on National Rum Day? The SkyTai is our version of a classic Mai Tai with an island twist. The great thing about this drink, besides it being freaking delicious, is you can walk right up to the bar and order one! No reservations needed; hit up the bar counter for happy hour from 5-7pm and get yourself a SkyTai. You’ll be glad you did!

SkyTai – Light rum, orgeat, orange, passionfruit, orange, guava, dark rum float ($7 on Happy Hour)

Now that you’re thoroughly convinced SKY Waikiki is the best place to celebrate National Rum Day, don’t forget to mark your calendar for Thursday, August 16! We can’t wait to see all your smiling faces as you sip on your rum drinks, listen to Big John, and soak in all the #views.
